“Jack Fry is the Patch Adams of Education” LA Examinar
From the cornfields of Indiana to the streets of South Central Los Angeles…
They Call Me Mister Fry is Jack Freiberger’s,“Mr.Fry” (an award winning playwright, actor, and teacher).true-life story teaching 5th grade in South Los Angeles as a first-year teacher told in a theatrical setting and style. It’s a funny, poignant solo show that tells the struggles of a mid-west, white boy from Indiana dealing with a challenging, multi-ethic body of students and his journey through the bowels of big city bureaucracy. It focuses on his relationship with two challenging students and how they affected each other’s lives. Most importantly, it follows the evolution of “Mr. Fry” into an effective teacher-- who came to teach, but ended up learning.
They Call Me Mister Fry has been running in theaters, college campuses, and performing arts centers for the past 2 years. Fresh off a 3 month, extended off-Broadway run, Mister Fry was selected as one of the Best of the Fest by dctheaterscene.com from the 2009 Washington Capital Fringe. It was given the distinction of Best Male Monologue of the Cap Fringe by allartsreview4u.com. In addition, it was selected as one of the best solo shows on the West Coast by Goldstar’s Miss this Show and Die.
Mister Fry had the honor of presenting 2 at-capacity “Command Performances” at the Department of Education in Washington, DC before the most powerful people in the world of education.
They Call Me Mister Fry is a fresh new take on an ongoing challenge that isn’t going away any time soon – what does it take to keep young idealistic teachers in the classroom where they’re needed the most before they burn out. This comedy and drama has all the laughs, tears and heart of an American Classic-- a beautiful story about transformation, redemption, the fragility of life, and what we think our purpose is… Directed by Second City Legend Jeff Michalski.
